JONES, Sir Lyman Melvin
Lyman Melvin Jones (1843-1917) visited the Bell Farm on April 7-8, 1884.
He was born in York County, Ontario and in 1873 joined the farm implements firm of A. Harris, Son & Co., located at Brantford. By 1903 he had become President and Managing Director of the company, now called Massey-Harris.
Jones lived in Winnipeg from 1879-1891, when he relocated to Toronto. While in Winnipeg he served on City Council as a member and mayor, and in Thomas Greenway's Provincial Government as Provincial Treasurer. He was appointed to the Canadian Senate in 1901, and Knighted in 1911.
Melvin Jones was married to (1) Huldah Stephens in 1866; and to (2) Louisa Irwin in 1873, and they had one daughter.
