Register entry 243 - Hugh N. Baird


Visited the Bell Farm on Aug. 27, 1887. Hugh Nichol Baird (1836-1910) - was born in Cobourg, Ontario, and was educated in Montreal, Quebec. He became a leading grain export merchant with the firm of 'Crane and Baird' of Montreal and Toronto.

In two "Manitoba Free Press" articles on Aug. 24 and 30, 1887, mention is made of the trip that Baird and Carruthers - prominent Eastern Canadian grain merchants - were taking in the West to inspect the Manitoba harvest, visiting Carberry, Minnedosa, Brandon and Rapid City - and extending their foray as far as Indian Head to check out the famous Bell Farm.

From 1891 to 1892 he was President of the Toronto Board of Trade.

Hugh married Amelia Capron, of Paris, Ontario in 1865. She was born in 1839 and died in 1906; he died in 1910.

Baird also served on Toronto Council, and was a director of the Great North-West Telegraph Company, of the Western Assurance Company, and of Imperial Life.
