ELWOOD, Thomas Caldwell
Bell Farm Investor
Thomas Caldwell Elwood (1853-1886) was a Superintendent with the Dominion Telegraph Company. The brother of Mrs. Catherine A. Bell, and hence Major Bell's brother-in-law, he was one of the original investors in the Qu'Appelle Valley Farming Company, buying 100 shares. He lived in Toronto at that time (1882).
In 1880 he married Catherine Worthington.
Thomas Elwood was also a well known figure skater, and partnered with his sister, Margaret [Elwood] McCrady in various competitions between 1868 and 1870, including one in New York. Mrs Bell's father, James Galt, sued the Frank Leslie newspaper over an "indecent" illustration of Margaret costumed as Mercury during a skating event. The newspapers reported that he was asking for $50,000 in damages - almost a million dollars in today's money.
