JEFFERSON, Francis George - Bell Farm employee

Deaf mute who worked on the Bell Farm in 1886 - Francis George Jefferson was among 38 deaf mutes who migrated from England to Canada in the mid 1880s. They were encouraged to go by Miss Jane Elizabeth Groom, and settle in Manitoba. Miss Groom was an instructor at the "Morley Hall Mission to the Deaf and Dumb", in Hackney, London, England. After settling in Manitoba, Jefferson moved to Indian Head, where he was employed on the Bell Farm. Jefferson was one of five Hackney residents employed by Major Bell and paid the same monthly wage as other settlers. The arrival of the deaf mutes caused some controversy - suggesting that England was relocating her "burden" here. The Major and Mrs Bell did, however, welcome them.
