Register entry 307 - Sir William Whyte - CPR manager
Visited the Bell Farm on April 20, 1894. William Methven Whyte (1843-1914) was born in Scotland, and worked in the railway business his entire life, first in Scotland (1862), and then in Canada after he moved to Ontario in 1863. He started as a lowly clerk, and progressed through the Grand Trunk Railway and later the Canadian Pacific Railway, eventually becoming its Vice-President in 1910, after years of service based out of Winnipeg. He retired and was knighted in 1911. In retirement, he accepted a seat on the CPR's Board of Directors.
On April 20, 1894, as Manager of the Western Lines of the CPR, Whyte travelled to Qu'Appelle with Charles W. Milestone, Superintendent of the CPR’s Moose Jaw Sub-Division, to discuss arrangements for a new railway station for that community. While in the vicinity, they also visited the Bell Farm, along with Robert J. Whitla, a prominent Winnipeg businessman and politician.
