2008 - Members of Bell Barn Society with an original 1882 window frame
L-R: Bruce Olesen, Thor Johnson, Frank Korvemaker, Jerry Willerth - photo by Dayle Bowman. This original 1882 window frame was salvaged for display, and for use in designing the 36 replacement windows that were incorporated into the reconstructed round stone barn. The original windows had a single thin pane of glass, which was subject to easy breakage. Therefore, much stronger glass blocks were inserted in the new windows.
Most of the original 8 x 8 inch square windows were removed in 1923 and replaced with much larger rectangular windows. The larger windows were necessary as the barn was being converted that year for use as a cow barn, rather than continuing in use as a horse stable. These new windows provided much greater light inside the barn for milking purposes.
This is the only original 1882 window frame that survived the 1923 renovation, and is now on display inside the reconstructed Bell Barn.
