Walker, Dan - last private owner of the round Bell Barn
Dan Walker standing by the round barn on Sept. 26, 2006. The small square window was the only original window of this design to survive from the 1882 construction.
Dan, and his wife Gertrude Thauberger, were the last private owners of the round stone Bell Barn. In 1985 he acquired a 10 acre parcel of largely open prairie that included the historic round barn, a Bell Farm Cottage, a Bell Farm wooden barn, and a 1950s house. Dan, an employee with PFRA (Prairie Farm Rehabilitation Administration), subsequently landscaped the acreage into a very attractive yard, and toured many visitors through the historic barn.
In 2006 Dan agreed to donate the barn to the Town of Indian Head. The structure was dismantled in 2008 and reconstructed north of the acreage, to its original 1882 design, opening to the public on July 24, 2010.
