WELLS, Rupert Mearse - Ontario politician


An Ontario politician; visited the Bell Farm in September 1883.

Rupert Mearse Wells (1835-1902) - was a lawyer and a Liberal provincial and federal politician. He first served as a member of the Ontario Legislative Assembly (1872 - 1882), for the constituency of Bruce South. During part of that time he also served as the Speaker of the Assembly: from 1874 until 1879.

Wells was also a Member of the Canadian Parliament, representing the federal constituency of Bruce East in the House of Commons from 1883 to 1887, again as a Liberal, and as a member of Her Majesty's Official Opposition.
