Register entry 143 - Ralph Thomas Rokeby


Visited the Bell Farm on Sept. 27, 1884 - Ralph Thomas Rokeby (1863-1924) was the second son of Archbishop Henry Ralph Rokeby. Ralph Rokeby became a Winnipeg businessman who later moved to the United States.

In 1885 Rokeby was Secretary Teasurer of the Manitoba Milling and Brewing Company, and later became its president. He was also involved with the Manitoba and North-West Railway.

In 1886 he became one of the provisional directors for the newly-formed Bell Farming Company, Ltd., and was listed a being a farmer in the company's incorporation documents. In 1888-89 he was involved with a number of lawsuits relating to the Bell Farm's operations.

While busy in the business community, Rokeby also took time for some sporting activities, including being a member of the Winnipeg Cricket Club in 1891.

Rokeby experienced problems with some of his business interests, and in 1893 he was forced to flee to the United States to avoid being arrested in matters relating to the the newly defunct Commercial Bank of Manitoba, of which he was the manager.

Rokeby went on to live in New York and was married there on April 17, 1900 to Maud Julia Eden. He died in England in 1924.
